Why Your Ukulele Tuner Shows the Wrong Note

A tuner does not know which string you meant to play. It listens, measures the pitch and names the nearest note. That is why it can show a letter you did not expect: the string may be far from its target, or the tuner may be set for a different tuning.

Check the tuning it is set to

Most soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles use G–C–E–A, string 4 to string 1. Make sure the tuner is set to the same tuning as your strings.

If the setting does not match the strings, the letters can look wrong even when the strings are fine.

A string far from its target names a neighbour

Say the A string has dropped well below A. The tuner hears a pitch closer to G♯ than to A, so it shows G♯. It is not mistaken; it is naming the nearest note. Raise the pitch slowly and watch the letter change to A, then make the small final adjustments.

A tuner needle in three places. Left, flat: raise the pitch slowly. Middle, in tune: leave it. Right, sharp: lower the pitch slowly.

If the letter is far from the one you expect, stop before a large turn of the peg. Check the string you are plucking and the tuning you selected first.

Give the tuner one clean note

A one-minute check

Pluck G, C, E and A one at a time and say the letter you expect before you look. If three strings agree and one shows a neighbour, only that string is far off. Tune it, then check all four again. If the pitch keeps drifting afterwards, see why a ukulele will not stay in tune.
