Uku ("we") is a ukulele tuner app developed and operated by Summer Digital. This policy explains what data we collect when you use the Uku app and website, how we use it, and how we protect it. Uku is designed to never require an account or sign-in, and we deliberately keep the data we collect to a minimum.

What Data We Collect

Microphone —— The tuner uses your microphone in real time to analyze pitch, and all audio analysis happens on your device. If you use the recording feature, what you record stays only on your phone and you decide whether to share it — we never upload, collect, or store any audio data. When you import a chord chart from a picture or PDF, the picture is also read only on your phone and is never uploaded.

Practice reminder —— If you turn on the practice reminder, the notification is scheduled by this phone itself. It does not go through our servers and needs no account. You can turn it off at any time in the app’s menu, or turn off notifications in the system settings.

In-App Feedback —— When you use the app's built-in Feedback function (something's wrong, feature request), we collect the message you write, the feedback type, the app version, and your device model, to help us track and act on it. So that you can see our replies under "My reports" in the app, the app asks us for a randomly generated identifier, kept on your device (and carried to your other devices through iCloud Keychain). It contains no name, email address or device identifier and is used only to recognize these conversations as yours.

Brand and model suggestions —— When the brand or model of your ukulele is not in the list shown while you type, you can tap “Suggest adding it”. Only after you tap it do we receive the brand and model words you typed, with nothing that identifies you, and we use them to decide whether to add them to the list. The app also downloads the list of brands and models from our website now and then; that request carries no personal data.

Language Preference —— The website uses one cookie to remember your chosen display language — used only for that, never for tracking or advertising.

Android Launch Notification —— If you choose to leave your email address on the website to be notified when the Android version launches, we store that address and use it only for the launch notification — never for anything else. You can ask us to delete it at any time.

Songs you write —— Songs you paste or write (title, chords, words and notes) are stored on your device. We do not collect or upload them. They leave your device only through your own iCloud sync (see the next paragraph) or when you choose to share one.

iCloud sync —— Sync is on by default and you can turn it off at any time. While it is on, your ukuleles (with their photos), custom tunings, the songs you wrote and your practice (days played, scores and settings) are saved in your own private iCloud database, which Apple handles under its privacy policy. The data sits under your Apple account and we cannot read it. The ukulele in use and reminder switches are not synced. Turning sync off does not affect what is on your device.

Sharing a song —— When you share a song, the app first encrypts its content (title, chords, words, meter, strumming and notes) on your device and sends only the encrypted text to our server, which gives back a short link. The key needed to open it sits only in the part of the link after the “#”, which neither browsers nor the app send to a server, so we cannot read what you share. Encrypted content is kept for up to 90 days and then deleted automatically; you can also take a link back from the share screen at any time, which deletes it at once. The preview page on our website opens it in the browser of the person who has the link and shows the title, meter, tempo and chords, never the words. Without a connection the app uses a long link that holds the song in the address itself, which never passes through our servers. You can also share just a text chord chart. Anyone who has a link can see the song, so share only with people you trust.

Usage Analytics —— We use Firebase Analytics to collect usage data — such as whether tuning succeeded, whether the metronome or Chord Practice was opened, whether the trial has expired, whether a purchase was started or completed (including the amount and currency, but never payment details), and whether a tuning card was shared. This helps us understand how features are used and improve the product, and it is not linked to your name, email, or any account.

Usage statistics for your songs —— We record only whether you added, shared, received or played a song of your own, and how often and with which options you used editing tools (such as transposing or loop practice). We never record titles, words, chords or the links you share.

Device and Region Information —— Firebase automatically collects the device model, operating system and app version, language, an approximate region based on your IP address (country or city), and a random identifier generated for each app installation. We also record your App Store country, the app language, the microphone permission status, and whether you are in the trial, the trial has ended, or you have purchased. This data is used for analysis; we do not use it for advertising.

Photos —— When you share a tuning card, the app only asks for permission to add photos, so it can save the card you choose to your library. The card is created on your device; we never read anything in your photo library, and we do not receive the cards you share.

Update Check —— The app may ask Apple's public lookup service whether a new version is available. The request contains only the app's identifier and the storefront region used to fetch the release notes in the right language — no personal data. Apple handles connection information (such as your IP address) under its own policies.

The Uku app itself needs no registration and never asks for account information, an email address, or your real name.

How We Use This Data

The feedback you submit shows up in our internal admin dashboard and is pushed to the development team's LINE group in real time, helping us respond and improve the product quickly. We don't use your feedback content for any other purpose.

Who We Share Data With

LINE —— The feedback you submit is pushed to our team's internal group via the LINE Messaging API.

In-App Purchases —— Purchases are always processed by the Apple App Store or Google Play — we never see or store your payment information, only a "purchased" status from Apple or Google.

Firebase Analytics —— We use Google's Firebase Analytics service to process the usage, device, and region data described above. Google handles this data under its own privacy policy, including the device identifier and approximate region that Firebase collects automatically; we never give Google information that directly identifies you, such as your name or email address.

Website —— The website's "Notify me" form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to prevent bot abuse, and for some languages the website loads fonts from Google Fonts. These services may receive your IP address and browser information.

Beyond that, we never sell your data or provide it to third parties for marketing purposes.

How Long We Keep Data

Feedback and our conversation about it are deleted automatically 12 months after the last message; the app does not yet let you delete them yourself. If you'd like feedback or a conversation you've submitted, or an email address you left on the website, deleted sooner, please contact us using the details below. After changing phones or reinstalling the app, you may no longer see old conversations.

Children's Privacy

Uku isn't designed specifically for children, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

If we make significant updates to this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page and announce the change.

Contact

If you have any questions about this policy, feel free to reach us through the app's built-in feedback feature, or via "Contact" on our website.
